Levels of Bigu: How Energy Gradually Replaces Food
Once Bigu is understood as a shift in how the body replenishes itself, the next question naturally arises. How this process unfolds over time.
Bigu is not a single state. It is a gradual process structured in levels that reflect how deeply the body has learned to receive and sustain itself through energy rather than material intake.
Each level corresponds to a different relationship between food, water, energy gathering and internal stability.
The progressive nature of Bigu
Bigu develops through stages because the body cannot abruptly change its source of nourishment. The transition from material intake to energetic sustenance requires adaptation at physiological, energetic and mental levels.
This progression ensures stability and prevents depletion. Each level prepares the body for the next by gradually reducing dependence on food while strengthening the capacity to receive energy.
The beginner level: supporting the transition
At the beginner level, the body is still stabilising its ability to receive energy directly. For this reason, small amounts of food are used as support.
This may include light nourishment such as fruit or diluted fruit juices, while energy is supplemented through structured Qi and energy gathering practices. Food remains present, but it is no longer the primary source of vitality.
The duration of this stage varies. What matters is not time, but adaptation. As the body learns to rely more on energetic input, material intake naturally becomes secondary.
The intermediate level: energy as the primary source
At the intermediate level, food is fully suspended while water is still consumed. The body now relies mainly on energy gathering to sustain its functions.
Daily practice becomes essential. Energy is consciously absorbed to maintain physical stability, mental clarity and internal balance. When energy intake is sufficient, the body remains clear and functional. When it is insufficient, discomfort signals the need to adjust the process.
This stage marks a decisive internal shift. The body begins to reorganise itself around a new source of nourishment.
The advanced level: beyond food and water
At the advanced level of Bigu, neither food nor water is taken in. Energy gathering alone sustains the body.
This stage requires a high degree of internal refinement and cannot be approached prematurely. Without adequate preparation, it is neither safe nor effective.
Advanced Bigu is usually practiced for defined periods. During this time, metabolic activity slows, internal waste is reduced and vitality becomes increasingly subtle and stable.
Post heaven and pre heaven energy
Understanding the levels of Bigu requires understanding the types of energy involved.
At the initial stages, the body gathers Post Heaven energy. This includes absorbing Qi from natural sources such as plants, trees, sunlight, moonlight and atmospheric fields. This energy supports the beginner and intermediate levels of practice.
At more advanced stages, the body begins to gather Pre Heaven energy. Through refined internal breathing methods, the practitioner aligns with the Original One Qi, the primordial source from which life arises.
This shift marks a qualitative change in how nourishment is received.
The importance of correct technique
Bigu does not succeed through intention alone. It succeeds through correct method.
Energy gathering involves precise techniques. One must know which type of energy is appropriate at each stage and how to receive it correctly. Without this understanding, the body cannot sustain the transition and depletion occurs.
For this reason, Bigu has always been inseparable from cultivation practice. It functions within a structured system rather than as an isolated discipline.
Listening to the body throughout the process
Across all levels of Bigu, one principle remains constant. The process must be natural.
If genuine hunger arises, forcing the practice is a mistake. The body is signalling that conditions are not yet mature. Withdrawal is not failure, but discernment.
Equally important is the return to eating. When food is resumed, it must be gradual. Sudden intake of rich or excessive food disrupts the internal balance that has been established.
Bigu as a foundation, not a goal
The levels of Bigu describe how energy progressively replaces food. This replacement, however, is not the ultimate aim.
Bigu creates clarity, lightness and internal space. It reduces internal burden and prepares the system for deeper cultivation. What it does not do is guarantee awakening or liberation.
Its value lies in what it makes possible next.
